Katie Marshall
Katie Marshall’s paintings stem from impressions and memories of long drives, often made alone. Using the open road as an existential metaphor, she paints richly colored, lyrical landscapes that incorporate text, roadside iconography, and bold uses of color, gesture, and materiality to represent complicated emotional and psychic states. She aims to meld landscape painting with elements of gestural abstraction and to evoke experiences that are tinged with humor, neuroses, exuberance, and sometimes violence.
Marshall has a BA in Russian Literature from Reed College and an MFA from Cal State Long Beach (CSULB). Prior to getting her MFA she worked as a Russian translator; she is now a painter and a Lecturer in the CSULB School of Art. She has shown in Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as in Munich, Germany and St. Petersburg, Russia. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
