Melora Garcia
(b. 1980, Coachella Valley, United States)
Lives and works in Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley
Melora Garcia is an artist and educator whose artistic works are deeply rooted in fascination, the anthropological spirit of collecting, and the art of assemblage. Utilizing a wide array of materials including upcycled textiles, ceramics, photography, and welding, she creates multi-layered artworks that serve as rich visual diaries and intimate archaeological excavations.
As a Latinx and a Pascual Yaqui descendant, Garcia’s art is driven by a desire to preserve intergenerational histories and reimagine her culture's past, present, and future. Recent projects reflect her commitment to reimagining indigeneity and preserving ephemeral memories. Her work also addresses contemporary issues such as climate change and consumerism's impact on the body and natural world.
Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, including All Eyes Gallery in San Bernardino, Werby Gallery at CSU Long Beach, Landis Academic Center at the University of La Verne, the Mexicali Bienniel at the Santa Cruz Museum of Modern Art, the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture in Riverside, and the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena. Garcia received her BA in Visual Studies and Studio Art from California State University, San Bernardino, in 2019, and graduated with an MFA in Sculpture at CSU Northridge in 2024. She is currently a teacher-in-residence at Craft Contemporary Museum in Los Angeles.
